wait... I remember FFT from my Algo course before...
and some from my MATLAB... so you're looking for a message?
or just the contents (when you solved it)?

The contents are a message. The point of the game is to decipher that message hidden in the floating point numbers. The hints should help you figure out what to do with these numbers to decipher the secret message.

...looks intimidating. o.o

I'll give it a shot, though I'm too sure if I can get it... lol.

I faced a dead-end.. >.<

kinda used my MATLAB program here.. but erk..
some other time.. XD

Not sure what I'm supposed to do once we follow the two clues...
Am I allowed to PM Gendou in order to ask a question regarding a Cryptography Challenge?

Re: Cryptography Challenge #42!
Link | by Terror on 2009-06-19 21:01:06
No, ask it here so it's still equal. xD

>_> This challenge does give me an idea to a way to encode something giving similar information, but how you figure out how exactly to encode/decode is far beyond me. Gendou, if you're interested, I'll tell you if you'd like. I'll just keep my mouth shut after that then. xD

Okay, Terror, but I really fear that, if I even am thinking along the right track,
and I type it here, then I will be giving away a major clue.
But, then again, I may be totally wrong so...

So, I got the 512 coordinates, and they're plotted in two different ways,
one of which looks like this, and another of which looks like this.
And, remember, this is with the same data set.

The second one sort of looks like music to me. Sound waves.
Is that correct? Is the answer to the challenge a sound clip?
How can I make a program recognize the data set as music
and play the sound clip so that I can hear the answer??

Cool visualizations, d00d.
Try this FFT library: http://code.compartmental.net/tools/minim/manual-fft/
For example:
void decode()
{
  String[] values = loadStrings("encoded.txt");
  decoded = new float[512];
  encoded = new float[512];
  for(int i = 0; i < values.length; i++)
  {
    encoded[i] = Float.parseFloat(values[i]);
  }
  FFT fft = new FFT(512, 1);
  fft.forward(encoded); // read in the encoded data
  fft.inverse(decoded); // decode the message
  fft.inverse(decoded); // the library has a bug so you have to do this twice!
  for(int i = 0; i < decoded.length / 2; i++)
  {
    print(char(int(decoded[i])));
  }
}

Actually dood, the second image is what I tried at first and immediately thought "sound wave", but how to easily code/decode that in some decently easy form was the only problem. If I could find such a easy way to transcode that, I would do it. lol

Looks like I'll probably sit this one out. <_<

Is it just me or is there characters that can't be display??
